Maths

Pupils at QE2 are given the opportunity to explore mathematical concepts in a practical and meaningful way both in the classroom and outside at play or in the community to ensure that they are able to transfer the skills learnt to different environments and scenarios. It is important to ensure that pupils are able to generalise their mathematical knowledge as it will be necessary to apply their acquired skills to the many different situations that arise in adult life

The school’s developmental curriculum introduces pupils to a wide range of mathematical skills in the areas of using and applying, number and shape, space and measure.  Individual measurable targets are set for each pupil termly on their ILP’s, in these three areas to ensure that pupils make good progress and acquire new skills. Sixth form students’ work towards ASDAN accredited functional maths at the appropriate level.

All of our pupils are encouraged to investigate and understand the world around them, so maths is taught in whole class format as well as smaller streamed groups that challenge the ability or address the sensory need of each student by exploring matching, sorting, sequencing, counting, using money and learning to tell the time.

We are proud to have Numbers count provision to fill gaps in learning for those students that can focus and benefit from 1:1 sessions in order to develop their skills and progress their learning in maths.  This is usually focussed on our engineer pathway students although it is not limited to that pathway.a
